OpenAthens FAQ
What is OpenAthens?
OpenAthens is a secure single sign-on system that makes it easy to access Tufts-licensed electronic resources, whether you're on campus or off. Similar to EZproxy but with added benefits, OpenAthens improves security, saves staff time, and helps ensure reliable access to electronic resources for the future.
What changes will users see?
Most users will notice minimal changes, but here are some key updates:
- Login Experience: You’ll log in using a Tufts-branded OpenAthens page. Most users will use their Tufts username and password, while some will use the new Tufts Libraries Login. The process remains simple and familiar.
- Resource Links: Bookmarked links containing EZproxy (e.g., ezproxy.library.tufts.edu) will need to be updated for OpenAthens.
- Seamless Access: Once logged in, OpenAthens allows seamless access across supported platforms without repeated logins.
How long will the transition take?
The migration to OpenAthens is phased over several months. Here’s what to expect:
- Faculty, staff, and students: Update your EZproxy links to OpenAthens-compatible ones. Faculty should pay special attention to updating resource links in Canvas.
- Some resources will still use EZproxy while others will transition to OpenAthens.
- Tufts affiliates and Tufts Medical Center staff may need to use their EZproxy Library Access Number (LAN) for certain resources.
- Library staff will provide updates to minimize disruptions.
How do I update my EZproxy links?
Saved resource links with EZproxy need updating. Check out the Change your EZproxy Links page or use the EZproxy Link Transformer tool for easy conversion.
